Acrylic Painting Supply List
Purchase the best quality you can afford. I love Golden, so I can recommend Golden products. A standard color palette should include warm and cool colors. For example, warm colors are Hansa Yellow Medium, Naphtol Red Light, Green Gold, Cerulean Blue Hue, Mars Black and cool colors are Hansa Yellow Light, Napthol Red Medium, Quinacridone Magenta, Permanent Green, Permanent Violet (medium), Ultramarine Blue, Ivory Black. Additional Zinc/Mixing White (transparent) and Titanium White (opaque).
It is up to you what you want to use. There are several options for you: stay-wet palette, palette paper sheets, freezer paper, you can even use plastic plates from your last party. I do not recommend any hard plastic surface, when you mixed your paint with a palette knife it will damage the surface and is not easy to clean and use anymore. I prefer ceramic or glass instead of a plastic surface. Also, don’t choose a small size. I always work with 11x14 inches. That gives me the possibility to prepare a full range of colors for my painting.
What I also use a lot is Disposable Palette Paper. Easy, clean, fast. Just love it!
I like to use soft and stiff brushes in assorted sizes and shapes – Bristle Synthetic
Mediums, Gels, Pastes:
If you like experimenting, mixed media, playing with different textures get some of this supplies. There is a huge variety of mediums, gels and pastes out there to have fun with. My most used Medium is the Acrylic Glazing Liquid Medium, it slows down the drying time and is perfect for layering glazings. My favorite brand is GOLDEN. Mostly one of the best out there.
It is really up to you which surface you choose. It doesn’t matter if it is a streched canvas or a hardboard. Just use whatever preference you have. Sizewise I only make recommendations but it is also totally up to you what size you want the painting to be. Regardless of surface, each should be coated with gesso. Pre-streched canvases already come coated with gesso, coated hardboards are also available.
Additional Supplies and Tools:
Container for Water, Spray bottle to mist open paint, Paper towels/Small rags, Tablecloth to protect table surface, Stainless Steel Palette Knifes to mix or apply paint directly, Easel (Table or standing Easel), Color Wheel (helps you to choose your color palette), Sketch book.
In case you already have some supplies, don’t buy new ones for now. We will make it work and you can get a better quality later if necessary and if you choose so.
